MDs in medical school are taught about disease and drugs but not about health or nutrition/We badly need a ch?

21 Oct

we do not need drugs with side affects so why are they considered mandatory?MDs do not learn about health and nutrition-why?What is problem with medical schools?Plenty!

MDs do learn about the value of foods, vitamins etc in relation to the diseases. How too little or too much can cause problems.
They don’t need to learn to cook in order to know vegetables are good for us and why plus how bad too much salt or sugar is for us and why.
You might be glad of a drug with a side effect one day, it could mean the difference between life and death.

Health And Natural Sports Nutrition For The Champions

19 Oct

They say that great artists are made, not born. The same could also be said for athletes. Of course, genetics plays a large part in differentiating a mere athlete from a sports champion, but to be able to attain that legendary status in the Hall of Fame, an aspiring sportsman must go through the strictest of diets that will help shape and strengthen the physique.

By drinking sufficient amounts of water and consuming a balanced diet, the body can generate a lot of energy which will greatly help in boosting for top athletic performance.

What are the factors to be considered in designing a complete and healthy natural sports nutrition program?

1. Hydration
Obviously, the most important thing in natural sports nutrition is water. The significance of water can never be discounted because the human body is composed of sixty percent of it, and every bodily function cannot work without water. The good old eight-cups-of-water-a-day recommendation is essential because the body must replace the water it eliminates, like sweat and urine.

Here are some helpful reminders to maintain proper hydration:
-Instead of slugging humongous amounts of water in infrequent sittings, drink small portions in frequent durations.
-Cold beverages aid the body in cooling down body temperature, therefore cutting down the amount of sweating.
-One should drink 2-3 cups of water for every pound that the body losses after exercising.

2. Sources of Fuel
A balanced diet is another must for natural sports nutrition. Athletes must acquire the perfect combination of calories that can be consumed from protein, carbohydrates and fats, which are great sources of energy.

Carbohydrates are the most important fuel source, which can be found in foods such as breads, pastas, rice, fruits, veggies and cereals. These foods can supply the body about seventy percent of the needed daily calories. Carbs provide the body the power and endurance it needs for short-duration activities that involve maximum level of intensity. This fuel comes from the energy given by sugar and starches that the body converts.

Here are strategies to maximize the potential of carbs:
-Start loading up on carbs at least several days before prior to the competition.
-Carbs should be consumed in greater amounts in the duration of activities that lasts more than one hour to fend off the onset of fatigue.

Another imperative factor in natural sports nutrition is proteins. Athletes should eat lots of dairy, eggs, meats, fish and chicken, along with nuts and beans. Protein supplies as much as fifteen percent of calories in the body. To determine the amount of protein needed by an athlete, the following factors should be considered: his fitness level, the type of exercise along with its duration and intensity, and his overall carb and calorie intake.

The last fuel source that is important for natural sports nutrition is fats. There are two kinds: saturated and unsaturated. Although it is a significant component in nutrition, the intake of fats should be strictly monitored. Too much consumption of fats may lead to major health problems such as cancer and heart disease.

The road to sports excellence is not easy. Along with fostering courage and determination, athletes have to follow the strict regimen brought on by natural sports nutrition. But all of these will be worth the trouble once victory is achieved.

What impact does food advertising have on the increasing incidence of nutrition related health issues in Aus?

18 Oct

What impact does food advertising have on the increasing incidence of nutrition related health issues in Australia?

Food advertising persuades the gullible and the stupid to buy and eat things just because they saw them in an advert, without regard to whether that was a smart thing to do.

And if Aus has as many gullible and stupid people as we do here in the USA, the food advertisers are doing a booming business.

Fitness And Nutrition For Health

17 Oct

In the age which we live there is an unprecedented focus on getting and staying healthy. As more and more research points to the effect of fitness and nutrition on our overall health, the findings become more difficult to ignore. There is no doubt that the food that we eat and the physical activity that we perform significantly impact our weight and our body’s overall health and longevity.

When you look at fitness and nutrition and the consequences of ignoring their importance, it is not difficult to see how large a role they play in our health. First and foremost, it is important to understand how powerfully diet can affect us. Natural, whole foods – such as fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins – give our bodies the vitamins that it needs to function effectively. We have energy when we eat right. And when we have energy we burn fat. Eating properly allows us to maintain a healthy weight and keep undue stress off of our hearts; it also allows us to keep our blood pressure and cholesterol levels in the healthy range. Most importantly, good nutrition keeps our bodies stocked with antioxidants that fight off a range of illnesses including cancer.

But nutrition does go it alone; fitness and nutrition go hand in hand for achieving good health. When we keep our bodies active through a consistent exercise program, we are adding to our body’s ability to metabolize food and keep weight down. Further, good fitness means strong and limber muscles and a strong cardiovascular system. Exercise also lowers blood pressure and reduces stress levels.

Learning how to pair fitness and nutrition for optimum health means a commitment to a particular lifestyle. It is essential that you revamp your diet to eliminate fatty, high-sodium, and processed food and replace it with fresh, natural – and even organic – choices. But remember, fitness and nutrition work best as a team. Implement a consistent regime of physical activity into your daily schedule including cardiovascular work, stretching, weight training, and even yoga or Pilates.

When you truly understand the importance of fitness and nutrition in your life, you will understand how crucial these lifestyle changes are in order to live a long and healthy life.

Can I get a bachelors degree in Health and Nutrition science if I get an associates in Veterinary Technology?

17 Oct

Or do I have to have an associates in the Health and Nutrition? If not, is there any bachelors in science degree I CAN get with the Vet Tech associates, besides the Vet Tech bachelors? (The bachelors in Vet Tech is more based on Management than science)

It all depends on what the pre-recs are for the upper division courses. You might have to take a couple of extra classes during your first 2 years of G.E. Your best bet is to meet with a counselor and let them know your goals…they should be able to push you in the right direction.

Nutrition and Your Mental Health

What does nutrition have to do with mental health? You might be surprised to find out the truth behind what happens when a person has a nutritional deficiency.

Nutritional deficiencies can cause all sorts of psychiatric symptoms including apathy, low energy, irritability, insomnia, low energy, agitation, fatigue, concentration problems, aches and pains, weight changes, including weight loss or weight gain. Sound a lot like the symptoms of depression? The truth is the average American diet of fast food is low in vital nutrition that you need for your body to function correctly.

This isn’t to say that all depression is caused by bad nutrition but it’s certainly a contributing factor in many cases and poor nutrition will always make depression worse. Antidepressant drugs also do not correct nutritional problems. So if your depressed because of nutritional problems an antidepressant will only partially cover up the problem and you body still won’t function correctly.

The Importance Of Nutrition For Your Overall Physical And Mental Health

15 Oct

Understanding nutrition as one of the key factors in health.

Scientific evidence is very clear about this: we can definitely manage our own health through the things we daily eat.

Did you know that scientists are actually looking into ways of protecting astronauts from radiation by means of dietary supplements? Radiation hazards in outer space present an enormous danger for the safety of astronauts, it causes the formation of free radicals. Through a special nutrition however astronauts are able to counter the effects of these free radicals.

The same principle applies to us ‘normal’ humans. Free radicals are forming all over our body due to all kinds of environmental attacks. It is a good thing that nowadays more and more people take notice and change the way they live in order to embrace the benefits of a healthy nutrition and exercise.

If a healthy body and mind is what you want, understanding nutrition is of the utmost importance. In its infinite wisdom nature has provided us with everything one needs to promote growth, immune system, mental alertness, physical strength and so on. Without a basic understanding about nutrition it will be very difficult, if not impossible to establish a diet which includes the necessary elements the body needs.

What exactly does understanding nutrition involve?

Quite simply put: everything you ingest has an influence on your body. So you have to make sure that what you eat contains those elements your body needs. What your body needs are carbohydrates, fat, protein and last but certainly not least water. The amount in which each of these elements is consumed influences greatly the way you feel, react and age

1. Carbohydrates – this is the number one energy source of the body. Our liver and the muscles of our body need a sufficient intake of carbohydrates in order to maintain good health. You can find two major types of carbohydrates ( or carbs as some people prefer to call them):

-simple carbohydrates, which are predominantly of a sweet nature (eg. fructose, sucrose, glucose, etc) and

-complex carbohydrates, which are based on starch (and can be found in corn, brown rice, wheat, etc).

2. Fat – must be taken in the required amount in order for it to moderate the metabolism and protect vital organs. Too much fat in your daily nutrition has the opposite effect however. The two major fats are

-cholesterol : you can get cholesterol from seafood, eggs, dairy products and meat.

- Triglycerides: saturated, poly-saturated and mono-saturated fats, they have an influence on your weight and heart function.

3. Protein – Witout protein the body cannot grow or repair itself. The non-essential amino-acids are manufactured by the body itself ( hence the term non-essential, the body can provide its own ) while the essential amino-acids would have to be introduced into the body by consuming the right foods.

4. Water – the body needs a lot of water: at least eight glasses every day. This amount helps the body to expel toxins, fight dehydration, prevent heat stroke, moderate body temperature, digestion and so many other functions. We all know humans can stay without food up to three weeks; however, they will perish without water in as little as 48 hours.

The right sort of wall balanced nutrition contributes directly to the health of individuals and communities. Clinical research as well as evidence collected through laboratory tests and field work support the importance of concept to the practice of clinical medicine, dentistry, and public health.

Do they even teach Health and Nutrition anymore?

15 Oct

Everyday theres those freaking posts like "If I eat only 100 calories a day how much weight will I lose" and so on. Are the kids these days just stupid, or is nobody bothering to teach them Health or Nutrition?
I can understand wanting to lose weight, but why not do it the RIGHT, HEALTHY WAY THAT ACTUALLY WORKS WITHOUT KILLING YOURSELF?

Apparently they don’t… because every fifth post is "am I pregnant?"

Health class used to teach you how you got that way, and how to prevent it…

How do electrolytes and water affect health nutrition/food nutrition of humans?

15 Oct

And what would be the proper amount of food intake to have a proper balance of the two? And what foods/drinks would be proper to have to have the right amount?

The human body is about 72% water and an electrolyte is any substance containing free ions that behaves as an electrically conductive medium. If you decrease either level you have a problem.

Water is critical to maintaining electrolyte levels. The first stages of dehydration are feeling sick and muscle cramps. You also have problems processing information. Everything in the body is controlled by the electrical signals sent back and forth to the brain. If your body can’t conduct these electrical signals, you have problems. Water & electrolytes handle these signals.

Water is also an important part of the digestive process. It is needed to process food and flush the intestines. Blood is made up of plasma which is also mostly water and so is sweat which helps to regulate the body’s temperature. Water is a part of every process in the body.

The proper amount of food depends on your size and the items you eat and the quality of those items. Proper foods are the ones that contain the most minerals and vitamins (fruits, vegetables, nuts). Protein should come from fish as the oil in fish is very good for you. The only drink the body requires is water.

The biggest problem we face is the depletion of minerals & nutrients in the soil we grow our food. There are also problems with pesticides and herbicides. Water is polluted and chemical laden. Fish swim in this water.

So the best is organically grown foods, fish raised in filtered water and Good, high quality drinking water. The best is ionized, filtered, alkaline water.
For more information check out http://www.waterdietblog.com/
hope that answers the questions.

What are the laws regarding restaurants displaying health/nutrition facts on the packaging of the product?

14 Oct

I am writing a paper about this and am having trouble finding what I’m looking for. Are there any laws right now that force restaurants (especially fast food) to do this? I noticed that McDonald’s already does do it but other companies do not.

They have to have it available because of food allergies and the like, but they don’t have to display it. They figure if you are diabetic you will know not to order death by chocolate, or you’ll ask first.

As far as packaging, generally restaurants don’t really have packaging, unless you mean the wrapper the big mac comes in?

Will a course in Health & Nutrition allow me to become a qualified dietician?

13 Oct

The course is a degree.

I think you’ll have to do another course after it to become a proper dietitian, possibly a degree. I’m not sure exactly, but I’ve got nutrition and weight management qualifications as part of my personal trainer qualification but it doesn’t make me qualified dietitian.

A Balance Intake Of Health Nutrition

13 Oct

Health nutrition from food you eat and drink is your health and strength. What you eat is part of what you are and what you will become. What you choose for a meal has an impact on our body either positively or negatively. The quality of food you take affects the length and quality of your life. Many life threatening diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cancers, are often, at least in part, linked to poor nutrition. Much of these diseases could be prevented with sufficient health nutrition intake.

We are often told that we must eat a balanced diet to obtain health nutrition for our wellbeing. However, what is a balanced diet? How do you know you are achieving the correct balance? Many of us do not eat enough healthy carbohydrates. Many of us are unaware of a diet which is very low in fat can cause as much harm to our body as a high-fat diet. Many of us do not know that we eat more protein than we really need, and that too much can be bad for us. Many of us fall short on the daily requirement of vitamins and minerals that our body need.

A perfect diet should contain all needed health nutrition such as carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals, fibre, in the right quantities. The WHO suggests at least fifty per cent of calories in our diet should come from complex carbohydrates, no more than thirty five per cent comes from fat and up to fifteen per cent comes from protein. The allowance for alcohol consumption is no more than five per cent.

To get fifty per cent or so of carbohydrates you need to ensure that at every meal you have a good portion of starchy carbohydrates food such as rice, pasta, potatoes, or bread. At most meals, you need good portion of vegetables and/or fruits. You should also include small portion of low- or moderate-fat protein such as fish, poultry, pulses and lean meat in our diets. High-fat protein such cheese, dairy product and fatty meats should be eaten less frequently and in even smaller portions. As all fat is a calorie-dense food, ideally you should include only small quantities of oil such as olive or corn oil in your meals. The majority part of your daily calorie needs have been taken up. There is only little room for alcohol and for the sugars. So, add these to your diet in moderation, if at all.

A variety and a balance intake of health nutrition is the most important element of a healthy diet for life. To ensure adequate amounts of all necessary vitamins, minerals, fat, protein, carbohydrates and fibre, eat as wide a variety of foods as you can. You should eat different sources of carbohydrates, varying types of protein, lots of different vegetables, salads and fruits.

There is no need to worry too much about the exact nutritional content of every morsel of food you eat. The fact is that almost any kind of meal can be adapted to form part of a healthy diet if you follow the abovementioned guidelines.

Pregnancy Nutrition Diet, Health Mens Issue Also

13 Oct

As a family, the conception of a baby is an event that affects both the mother and the father. Often, the focus is primarily on the mother naturally. She is the one carrying the baby. But a pregnancy nutrition diet, health, mens food choices and the level of physical activity are all part of the big picture. The truth is that even fertility itself is affected by nutrition. If you have been trying to conceive with no results, it is important that both the man and woman look at their diet. A womans conception chances can be improved with a vitamin filled pregnancy nutrition diet. Health, mens nutritional status and the increased production of sperm are also major factors increasing successful conception possibilities.

The Same Plan

To put it simply, the healthier a mans sperm is, the better his chances are he will conceive. Sperm health includes sperm counts and sperm motility. With a pregnancy nutrition diet, health, mens dietary needs and basic overall nutritional requirements are met. So a father-to-be can follow the same plan as the mother-to-be. The only adjustment that needs to be made is for the size and weight difference between men and women.

A pregnancy diet plan follows simple but essential recommendations for proper nutrition. It provides the right amount of vitamins and minerals. The same plan that aids in the development of a healthy baby and keeps the mother healthy at the same time, can also aid in the very conception of that same baby.

- Vitamin C, D and E contribute to healthy sperm production

- The mineral zinc can increase sperm production

- Balanced diet improves overall health

- Eating brightly colored vegetables can increase sperm motility

- Eating brightly colored fruit can also increase sperm motility

- Vitamin and mineral supplements can reverse problems created by environmental toxins

- Vitamin and mineral supplements fill nutritional voids left by prepackaged foods

Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants. Antioxidants can help prevent damage to sperm caused by age and nutritional shortages. The organs that are important for reproduction are easily damaged by environmental factors also. Increasing antioxidants can prevent those factors from preventing conception. The bottom line is that good nutrition plays a critical role in improving the chances for conception. A pregnancy nutrition diet, health, mens issues and the babys development are the major concerns of a pregnancy.

A Healthy Family

There is not much that is more beautiful than a healthy baby. Nutritional health can play a major part in the days leading up to conception. Fertility is affected by stress, nutrition and physical problems. Stress and nutrition can be controlled to a large extent by our food choices. Planning for conception should include attention to pregnancy nutrition diet health. Mens health is just as critical to the procreation of the baby. Eating a balanced diet that provides all the essential nutritional requirements can one day mean the difference to having a baby to call your own.

Forgotten Health And Nutrition Secrets

13 Oct

Now days so many people live in a fast paced existence that leaves them reaching for a fast meal from convenience stores and fast food restaurants. Unhappily, these kind of foods, many of which incorporate chemicals and food coloring, are harmful to health.

To cut out the chemicals and preservatives for continued good health, means going back to food in their natural state. Skip the pre-packaged and pre-prepared foods as often as possible.

These fast foods are not whole food giving the vitamins, minerals and enzymes needed by your body. Sometimes what is eaten is not even real foods and provide little nutrition to build or restore health.

You need to take a look at what you eat and whether you are getting your health and nutrition needs met. One health and nutrition secret is to use the first-rate foods, grown organically if possible.

Eating a balanced diet is genuinely the best way to ensure that you have good health and good nutrition. Nutrition experts suggest that the daily diet include so many servings from the five food groups of breads and cereals, vegetables, fruits, milk, meat/protein such as poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. Fats would be included, but used sparingly.

People living 50 to 100 years ago usually ate that way all the time, gaining nutrition from whole grain foods, vegetables and fruits grown and eaten fresh from the garden, or sold locally. They generally ate smaller amounts of meat or chose meals with beans, peas and other legumes.

Are you one of the people that consider that if you don t eat well, you can just pop a vitamin pill and make up for it? Here is an additional health and nutrition secret: your body absorbs vitamins and minerals found in foods more readily than those found in vitamin pills.

Make vegetables, specially leafy green vegetables very dominant in your diet for a natural source of the vitamins and minerals that you must have for good health. Without this good source of nutrition, it is very hard to have good health. Choose genuine food over vitamins, then fill in if you think you are lacking with a super food powder.

Put this health and nutrition secret to work in your daily life and you will find over time that you are taking your health to a new level, rather than sacrificing your health because of poor or empty nutrition.
