DANGEROUS HEALTH AND NUTRITION ADVISERS OUT THERE!!?

18 Feb

Right i live and breath nutrition and health. I have pashionatly spent the past 5 years of my life studying health, nutrition and training.

I randomly stumbled on this web sight (which in general i think is quite good) about a week ago. To my absolute horror i have discovered some of the health and nutrition advice given to people. For example people who are in dangerously low weight categories being promoted to loose more weight! Im sorry but when it comes peoples health there is really no messing around.

What im trying to say is that anyone who has the knowledge out there to report individuals who are spurting dangerous rubish and make them very unwelcome!

Yup, that’s proana (pro-anorexia) for you. There is a lot of stupidity when it comes to fitness and health. The thing about anorexia or bulimia is that most people know it’s unhealthy and won’t do it.

Unfortunately, there are much bigger concerns to public health at large. Take for instance everyone that has been convinced they need to detox, or cleanse, or take some weird pills. Stuff like this is just messed up.

Best college in Texas for Health/Nutrition.?

17 Feb

I’m thinking about what college i want to go to, but i’m really confused.

I’m majoring in Health/Nutrition so im leaning towards more of a medical college..

AND what is the best college socially?? that has nice structure and a good rep? :)

The University of Texas at Austin would be my first choice, for a variety of reasons. They have a great nursing school and public health program, though I cannot specifically speak about nutrition. UT has a wonderful campus, as it is large, friendly and diverse. More importantly, you get to live in Austin, my favorite city in Texas. Good luck and Hook ‘em Horns.

By the way, my second choice would be UT Houston Health Sciences. I have attended both.

Health and Nutrition: the Myth of Perfection

17 Feb

I have said it and heard it countless times, ?I will start my program when the situation is perfect? or ?I will start next week, I?ve already fallen off my program?. At times, we all seem to get caught up with the idea of being Perfect. What I would like to share with you is that Being Perfect is a Myth. It?s not possible. You will have off days, you will fall of your program and you will experience challenges. What will determine your success is how quickly you get back on track and how quickly you create solutions. I have said the same thing many times before: There?s no starting or stopping, just doing. This idea has taken me many years to understand and accept.

Being a Collegiate Athlete and Fitness model I put so much pressure on myself to be perfect, to always be 100% compliant, to ignore what cards life dealt me, all with the thought that perfection in my nutrition & exercise would make me happy and mistakes would mean I?m failing. What I learned is the exact opposite. Mistakes are a part of life. They?re the way we learn.

You see, life is a process composed of many moments, some amazing and some challenging. Making your Health a Priority in your life is also a process. As you move through these processes you learn new things, then implement them as you go. This is the way you progress and evolve, and how you eventually achieve your goals. For example, I have worked with many clients that would eat too much food in a restaurant and/or have too many alcoholic beverages. They chose to enjoy the moment and they did nothing wrong, their choice is a part of life. The successful clients would evaluate the choices they made and see if anything at the meal could have been adjusted. They would then immediately get back on track and continue progressing, continue moving forward with an understanding that the occasional off meal is just part of the process. Unfortunately, a few clients would take that same event and view it as a failure because they weren?t Perfect, which would act as a catalyst sending their health into a downward spiral. The clients who struggled strived for something that isn?t possible, Perfection. They lived in the ?All or Nothing? mentality, just as I did for many years. With this attitude, you?re either 100% on or off completely.

The way you can break that mindset is to let yourself accept that Perfection is a Myth. Once you make the choice and accept it, the Possibility of achieving your Health Goals will become a Reality. Permanent Success with your health takes time and is accomplished through hard work, education, pacing yourself and finding enjoyment in the Process. I invite you to make that choice today, and remember: ?There?s no starting or stopping, just doing.? When you?ve finally adopted this mindset, you will feel far less pressure, achieve more than you could ever imagine, and have a great time doing it!

Sports Nutrition Supplements – Vitamins And Minerals

15 Feb

We envy athletes for their trimmed physique and endurance to long hours of physical activities. They achieve the body and endurance that we envy because of regular exercise, body training, proper diet and sports nutrition supplements.

Sports nutrition supplements may be in a form of capsule, powdered shakes, liquid food and candy-like bars. What are sports nutrition supplements and what they can do to your body are the things that you should know first before you head to your local health stores for gallons of protein shakes, carbohydrates bar, and amino acid capsules.

Sports Nutrition Supplements: Vitamins and Minerals
Some people think that sports nutrition supplements such as vitamins or minerals help enhance their performance in the field. According to many experts, however, extra intakes of vitamins and minerals don’t add up to improvement in performance, unless of course the athlete is suffering from vitamin or mineral deficiencies.

A well-balanced diet can meet most of the daily vitamin and mineral needs of an athlete.
You should remember to avoid sports nutrition supplements that promise ‘megadoses’ of vitamins and minerals to achieve a bodybuilding body, strength of a weightlifter and speed of a basketball player. Many athletes pop these sports nutrition supplements without question. Don’t be like them. They are the type of athletes who are most likely to suffer from bursting veins and even arteries because of these super supplements.

Also, avoid sports nutrition supplements that claim to be ‘herbal’ in nature. Don’t self-prescribe vitamin oil supplements or ‘herbal’ muscle grower without asking your physician first. Usually, these ‘herbal’ supplements go in the guise of herbal supplement, when in fact they are capsules of steroids.

If you want to help your immune system, you can take megadoses of vitamin C. Vitamin C is water soluble and excess of which is easily discharged through sweat and urine.

To avoid sports anemia, especially to females who lose blood every month due to menstruation, the mineral iron should be part of an athlete’s list of sports nutrition supplements. Iron, in blood, is responsible for carrying clean oxygen to healthy body cells and removing carbon dioxide from them.

Athletes who have sports anemia have low hemoglobin level. You can easily spot an anemic athlete: he is always exhausted and seems to be in fatigue.

Taking iron supplements should be done with caution. There is such a thing as iron overdose. Consult your physician first before you take iron as part of your sports nutrition supplement.

Sports Nutrition Supplements: Proteins and Carbohydrates
Protein and carbohydrate are two of the most important sports nutrition supplements. Protein help the muscle grow and gain strength while carbohydrates fuel the body for long hours of exercise ahead.

Although an athlete can get protein and carbohydrates through his daily diet, he can get the large amount he needs by drinking protein shakes or eating a protein bar. There are also carbohydrates supplements in powder and bar form.

These sports nutrition supplements may be added to an athlete’s daily meal. Powdered proteins and carbohydrates are delicious ingredients to a glassful of smoothies or fruit punch.

If you love to bake your own pastries, you can add a tablespoon of these delicious sports nutrition supplements to your flour mixture. A vanilla flavored powdered protein may work for you. It is considered as the best tasting flavor of a powdered protein.

These sports nutrition supplements are also good for people who are on the go. They are good meal replacements for those who want to lose weight or meal addition for those who want to gain weight.

Nonetheless, anyone who has decided to add these sports nutrition supplements in their daily diet, they should also make it a point to exercise regularly to synthesize and burn out those protein and carbohydrates in the body.

Health/Nutrition info on Cornstarch?

14 Feb

So theres this diabetic recipe I wanna try, it asks for peanut butter, honey, and like 2 cups of cornstarch!! Thats more cornstarch than peanut butter and honey together! So…should I be concerned? That jsut seems like a lot of cornstarch. I dont really know whats in it…any ideas?

I find it \odd that a diabetic recipe asks for cornstarch. It’s 100% starch, or complex carbohydrate. It’s higher in carbs even than white flour. Cornstarch is the carb portion separated from corn. There’s nothing particularly strange about cornstarch per se; I’m just surprised that it’s used in diabetic baking.

Cornstarch makes tender cakes, somewhat like cake flour. I guess that’s why the recipe calls for it. I have seen French recipes for pound cakes that used corn starch as the flour. I occasionally combine cornstarch with regular flour as a substitute for cake flour.

All About Healthy Diet And Nutrition – How To Eat Right

08 Feb

With the fast-paced, technologically driven world people are now living, who would have the slightest idea that the most important rampart of normal living is being neglected?

Undeniably, because of the busy courses of people’s lives, people tend to forget some of the vital fragments in maintaining a healthy lifestyle diet and nutrition.

THE CONVERGENCE

The terms “diet” and “nutrition” are defined into two different sentences but are greatly connected. By definition, “diet” refers to the food and liquid intake of a person while “nutrition” pertains to the science of dealing with food and nourishment. When these two are combined, an entirely new meaning can be derived. More than the issues of food and liquid intake and the science of food and nourishment, diet and nutrition can revolve around nutritional information on various dietary supplements and the benefits vitamins and minerals to a person’s body.

Making yourself familiar with latest diet and nutrition topics, trends, and tips can lead you to the renewal of your health and well being commitment inside your home. You must remember that it’s never too late to redirect your eating habits, but before you take that drastic change, learn what are the common diet and nutrition mistakes so you can avoid them.

1. Careless assumption that the food choices you have are better than they actually are. Experts say that people who are very particular about diet and nutrition have larger tendencies of thinking and believing that their food choices are healthier than they really are. Make sure that you eat whole, fresh, and unprocessed foods whenever possible.

2. Confusion over carbohydrates. Although many people say that low carb diets are effective, experts say that there are excellent carbs that make people eat less. So before you cut down on carbs totally, make sure that you have consulted your dietician if this diet will be good for you.

3. You think you’re eating too much when you’re not. Experts say that one of the most common mistakes people make is that they overestimate and underestimate the amount of food their body needs. Make sure that you monitor the portion sizes of your food.

4. Not eating enough food or not eating often. Overeating and under eating may put the person at risk because it disrupts disrupting blood sugar and insulin levels. Make sure that you eat something every three hours and don’t starve before eating the next meal.

5. Neglecting the value of regular exercise. Making exercise a regular part of your life can definitely contribute to great diet and nutrition.

6. Taking in a lot of dietary supplements. A vitamin or dietary pill is a supplement that is meant to complement a person’s diet; therefore it should not be considered as substitutes for the foods you’re supposed to be eating. Experts say that one all-purpose multivitamin a day is enough to complement the nutrients you don’t get from the foods you don’t eat.

7. Following nutrition and weight loss guidelines by the book. Since people are different, it is only natural for them to have individual needs. Although diet and nutrition plans work for the majority of people, not everything can help you improve you overall diet and nutrition.

One of the major reasons why people get overweight or suffer from minor and major health risks is that they don’t practice having a healthy diet. Healthy diet which include eating balanced amount of food from all food groups along with exercise or regular physical activity can lessen people’s inclination to health problems.

PLANNING ON A HEALTHY DIET

Experts say that though basic principle of healthy diet is simple, most people are having a hard time sticking to it. Major reasons may include a super busy lifestyle, work that causes a lot of stress or even an environment that is not conducive to having a healthy diet.

Although it is hard to start and maintain a healthy diet, nothing is impossible if you really want to achieve a healthy mind and body. For starters, it is advisable to mix up food choices from each food group. Eating a large variety of foods and veggies can also serve as a warm up in avoiding the foods that contribute to drastic weight gain. Having a balanced intake of calcium-rich foods, whole grains, and protein-rich products will also keep you in track.

To be able to maintain eating a healthy diet, you must also know your restrictions of fats, salt and sugars levels, and intakes. Lastly, you must monitor your body weight regularly for you to know if your body is absorbing all the nutrients it needs.

Here are more tips for eating well and achieving a healthy diet:

1. Meals based on starchy foods are a good start to a healthy diet. Experts agree that people should eat more starchy foods such as bread, cereals, rice, pasta, and potatoes because they are a good source of energy not to mention being the main source of a range of nutrients of a person’s diet like fiber, calcium, iron, and vitamin B.

2. Load up a lot of fruits and veggies. Eating at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables a day is an ideal way to maintain a healthy diet. But, it is sometimes hard to achieve because people do not want to waste time peeling or chopping certain fruits and veggies. The best way to keep up with the recommended fruit and veggies intake if to eat a variety of fruits that are either fresh, frozen, canned or dried and picking out veggies that can be finger delights such as celery, broccoli, carrots, beans and peas.

3. Be more “fishy” Despite of the so-called “high mercury content” of fish, nutrition experts say that eating more fish especially oily fish is an important component of a healthy diet because it is a good source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

4. Try to cut down on saturated fats and sugars. Do not totally cut down on fats because your body needs it to stay healthy. Basically, fats are categorized into saturated and unsaturated fat. The former has high amount of cholesterol and the latter has lower amounts that lowers blood cholesterol. Cut down only on foods that are high in saturated fat such meat pies, sausages, hard cheese, butter and lard, pastry, cakes and biscuits, cream and the like. Also monitor your sugar intake because aside from causing decay, sugary foods can also be high in calories that contribute to weight gain.

5. Eat less salt. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure.

6. Drink lots and lots of water to keep your body well-hydrated.

Mangosteen Nutrition Tasty and Wholesome

03 Feb

Recently, researchers have found a new alternative medicine that has antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial and antitumor activity. That is mangosteen, which is also called “queen of fruit” for its health benefits and delicious taste. Mangosteen grows mainly in Southeast Asia, therefore it is rather difficult to find fresh fruit on the markets. But nowadays many companies solve this problem by offering consumers different forms of mangosteen nutrition.

What is Mangosteen?

Ripe mangosteen looks like an orange. The fruit have the same size, density and bright red color. The peel of mangosteen is rather firm and contains specific substances, which protect the fruit from insects. A ripe mangosteen is easy to peel. One should be cautious with the juice as it contains pigmentary substances that are difficult to be washed off.

Without peel mangosteen looks like a tangerine, but its color is white. The quantity of cloves of a fruit coincides with quantity of petals on the flower. As a rule, there are 5 cloves. The pulp of fruit is soft, the taste is also typical for citrus plants, but it is sweeter – some people say that it reminds them of a peach. Besides, the fruit has lots of healing properties, which make mangosteen nutrition both useful and tasty.

Forms of Mangosteen Nutrition

Today you may choose any way of mangosteen nutrition, according to your taste and preference. You may buy mangosteen fruit puree, which is made from fresh fruit, and just little water is added to it. There are also combined purees made from mangosteen and some other fruit.

You may prefer canned or frozen mangosteen fruit, fresh juice or using mangosteen extract. Besides that, mangosteen powder and juice concentrates are very popular. They contain neither preservatives nor imitation colors, but only transformed fresh fruit. Powder is usually added to the juice to make it thicker and to enrich it in xanthones useful antioxidants that mangosteen contains.

Another way is Vemma mangosteen nutrition program, developed by New Vision company. Due to its compound, based on mangosteen, aloe juice and green tea extract, this drink is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Such combination helps people to struggle against stresses, infection and many other things that weaken the state of immunity system.

In conclusion it should be said that mangosteen nutrition is an ideal decision for those people, who do not have enough time to take proper care of their health. And that may be said about all of us. So, if you got interested in improving your health with the help of mangosteen nutrition, you are welcome to order mangosteen products through the Internet or to buy then on the market.

Sport Nutrition: Eat your Way to the Top of your Sport

01 Feb

There are many factors that affect your performance, but one of the keys is having your body in top condition and provided with the best nutrition. While most people understand that nutrition is a major factor in keeping our bodies healthy, sport nutrition requires eating healthy to an even higher level. A wise athlete recognizes that sport nutrition is very important and is something to be taken seriously if they want to maintain good health.

While most experienced endurance athletes know the importance of eating and drinking enough calories, some do not consume enough nutrition for their sport. When establishing a proper nutrition plan for endurance athletes, you still need to factor in exactly which sport they are training for competition. While most people eat to satisfy their hunger and remain healthy, sport nutrition is designed to make your body perform its best.

When establishing a diet for an athlete, it is best to consult a professional sport nutrition expert. A good place to start planning meals and menus as an athlete is with a sport nutritionist if you do not know how to do so yourself. Another good option would be to try some of the diets given by the professionals that have already achieved what you’re striving to do. Feed your body with low nutritional and sugary garbage and see how fast you will begin to feel out of shape.

Very cheap food supplements will not give your body the proper nutrition when you are eating to maintain a diet for a particular sport. When it comes to potentially performance-enhancing supplements, one option is to, consult a sport nutrition expert for help. Another good place to obtain more information on sports nutrition is the internet; here you will find journals from different sport nutritionist. You can often find sports nutrition presentations and booklets placed all over supplement and nutrition stores as well.

While most people would love to have the problem of not eating enough for their body, it’s quite common for endurance athletes to lack the proper nutrition.
