What’s the Deal with Organic Foods? Part 2

10 Mar

Nutrition by Natalie

What is the difference between organic food and conventional food? Is organic really more healthy for you?

The USDA lays out certain guidelines that farms have to follow in order to be able to claim the food is organic. In this video Natalie discusses what each of those guidelines are.

What is surprising to learn is some of the growing practices of conventional farming and food processing. As an example, chemical plants and waste water treatment facilities will actually sell their toxic waist to conventional farms to use for fertilizer.

What you eat is an important part of health and nutrition.

    Customized vitamins …
Customized vitamins are slowly gathering attention. Vitamins should not be bought at stores for various reasons. You can get them from me, but if not, at least do your research.

    How …

    Awesome vids!
How about calling ‘organic’ farming or products… ‘traditional’ farming and ‘traditional’ products (it IS traditional… since the beginning of time!).
‘Traditional’ might sound less hippie or left-wing and then have a wider acceptance with the general populace.

I really liked the way you made the point that maybe there’s a reason(!) that Europe has made restrictions on GMOs.

    @007bcom no its not …
@007bcom no its not because of growth hormones. i have heard it several times that its because we live healthier lifes. for example last week i hard a report on the news that north koreans that moved to south korea were much shorter then south korean due to malnutrition.

we clearly live healthier lifes then 100years ago. most people back then didnt reach the age were most people get cancer today, they didn have as good medicine, malnutrition was a problem and they worn out theire bodys.

    Natalie GMO is not …
Natalie GMO is not natural, agriculture is not natural, the cropse that we use in agriculture are not natural. saying that something is natural or not dosent mean anything.

Since organic farms dont use for exampe pesticides they are LESS productive then conventional farms.

People are taller now then they were 100years ago since we live healthier lifes and have better medication.

    If you want to …
If you want to spend nine bucks on a pure organic loaf of bread, be my guest. Fact of the matter is to be labelled as organic it only has to have 51% organic. I guess the solution to the problem would be to legislate organic farming, let Walmart takeover, turn the soil into parking lots and import everything..’cause that is what will happen. 100 years ago, everything was organic, life expectancy, 45. Today nothing is organic and we are livin to 85Hope you starve to death waiting for organic food

@fluxx21 The government owns the US farms now. In order to get the subsidies, the US farmers must sign over their land forever to the gov’t.

    The whole reason …
The whole reason those non-organic farming methods were developed was because they DO make the yeilds greater and the process cheaper. Thus how could organic method not be more expensive.

    March 10, 2010 at 10:22 pm

    support your …
support your group’s points of view, but what you said didn’t make sense. “organic farms produce more per acre, it’s only more expensive because non-organic farms are subsidized”. If organic farming produced higher yields and not more expensive as you say, then all farmers would use those methods for their crops.
