My pre-bedtime routine includes nasal irrigation with a neti pot, so I found recent news about "brain-eating" amoebas gaining access through neti-based nasal washing, and causing primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, quite alarming.

Getting discount auto insurance can seem like a confusing nightmare, but when you’re armed with good information and advice, there are some great car insurance rates and discounts to be found. Below are some articles that can help you find specials, discounts, and little known tidbits that can all add up to big savings.
Insurance companies are nothing if not competitive and once they know that you are a ‘savvy’ insurance buyer they will be able to give you their best prices. To do this successfully you will need to be sure that everyone is quoting you on exactly the same requirements. Otherwise you will not be able to compare the prices correctly. Or to put it another way, you will be comparing “apples with Bananas” and this will drive you nuts trying to sort out the different deals or auto insurance bids from their standard packages.

“TV newscasts are increasingly seeded with corporate advertising
masquerading as news — and the federal government wants to do something
about it,” reports the Washington Post.
It’s an issue that may have arisen more often with health news than
with any other topic. A quick (and probably incomplete) scan of my
blog shows we’ve written about it every year for the past 5 years: Read the rest of this entry »

Head injury and its sequelae have been much in the news lately, with football players suing the National Football League for misleading them about the long-term dangers of repetitive hits to the head, and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) appearing at an event marking the one-year anniversary of her shooting in Tucson. This has brought to mind another famous head injury — that of Phineas P. Gage, who in 1848 was in an accident while working as a railroad gang foreman in Vermont. During rock blasting, powder ignited and propelled a 3 1/2-foot tamping iron through his head, entering the side of his face and exiting behind his left eye through the top of his head.

traditional open surgery. The marketing of the new, the high-tech, is
amplified by news coverage that uses headlines such as the following: Read the rest of this entry »

In a BMJ analysis
(unfortunately, a subscription is required for full access), Mayo’s Dr.
Victor Montori and two co-authors wrote that the use of surrogate
outcomes to suggest a benefit from medical interventions – instead of
“important patient outcomes such as death, quality of life or functional
capacity” – was damaging patient care.

But before Paul, there were the Shakers who gave the city its name. Shakers, or more properly the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing, were an American Christian sect that were founded in England in the 18th century and gained some limited popularity in America in the decades following the Revolutionary War.
